"Glow control unit
The glow control unit receives the information for the glow function from the engine-ECU. The start of the glow period, the glow duration, actuation frequency and duty cycle for the glow plugs are thus determined by the engine-ECU. Based on this information, the function of glow control unit is shown in the following descriptions.
* Activation of glow plugs with PWM signal. When PWM signal is low, glow plugs are energized.
* Integrated overload and excess temperature cut-off.
* Individual glow plug monitoring for overload cut-off in glow circuit and self-diagnosis of glow plug electronics.
Pre-glow
When the engine-ECU receives the ignition switch ON signal at the engine coolant temperature under 14°C, the pre-glow is activated.
The engine-ECU sends the first PWM signal to the glow control unit. The glow plugs are also actuated thereafter with the next PWM signal from the glow control unit.
In the first phase of the pre-glow function, the glow plugs are supplied for a maximum of 2 seconds with a voltage of approximately 11 volts. Thereafter, the glow plugs are supplied with the necessary voltage for the relevant operating mode by the glow control unit (maximum 4.4 volts).
The information about the status of the glow plugs is sent to the engine-ECU by the glow control unit with regards to the power drawn by each glow plug.
With a repeated start procedure, the full glow plug output is available to the driver. This allows run-on monitoring. For the run-on monitoring, the information about the previous pre-glow duration is stored in the engine-ECU within 60 seconds after the engine is switched off."
